Last U.P. Trip

Pere Marquette River fishing reports for Trout, Salmon, and Steelhead by Clint Anderson.

Hi All

Just got home from my last trip to the U.P. for the season. Snowmobiling Big Bay was kinda a bust. Lots of snow on the groomed trails but the thaw over the weekend and Monday didn’t help them. The groomed trails are flat and snow covered but really need 3″ to 6″ of fresh snow to make them really good and the off trail riding would need almost a foot to make them soft again. Tons of base left in the woods and on the trails. I did however bring all my ice fishing gear being prepared for bad snowmobiling conditions. We fished Independence Lake and it was fun. We scouted for some Perch but couldn’t find any big ones so we settled in a Bay and set tip-ups & tip downs for Pike and Walleye. We caught a bunch of smaller Pike, a legal Walleye and small Perch. We released everything but a Walleye that went to the fryer. Yum! It was great catching up with Ryan my good friend from high school that lives in Marquette Mi.. Ryan snowmobiles quite a bit living in the U.P. but really liked the ice fishing for a change of pace. One last stop at Au Train General Store on the way home for fresh out of the oven homemade U.P. pasty. 1/2 mile South off M 28. I always get 2 one to eat right then and one for home. Yum !

Steelhead fishing is still going good. We had a busy weekend with the warm up and it got people out on the river. The bright sun made the bite a little tough for some people. Everyone was working on there tans and having fun with temps in the high 40’s made it all worth it, bites or no bites. It has gotten cold again everything is hard and crunchy and a few snow flakes are flying around but no new accumulation to speak of. Pretty soon I will be putting up the ice fishing gear and be getting ready for some Spring trips that are fast approaching.

If you need a place to stay we have a bunch of rooms open at the Red Moose Lodge for the Spring Steelhead run and still a bunch of good days open for Spring Steelhead and Trout trips. Give us a call 231-745-6667 to make some plans and take a few days to enjoy the Spring weather that is coming soon.

Thanks for reading. Tight lines..

Clint
