Spring Steelhead season is here. It feels like Winter to us most days but the fish say it’s Spring…. So it’s Spring. I have been out fishing with friends Russ Madden and Jon Stefanciw ( Chewy) for a shake down on the Big Manistee with his jet sled and wet a line for a few hours in the middle of the day. We didn’t expect much of a bite starting at the crack of noon in bright sun. Burned some gas had some laughs, hooked one that broke us off. Russ and I hit the P.M. the next day for some streamer fun and I egged for 20 min in one spot with my indy rig. The high light was watching a big male Steelhead munch Russ’s streamer and fold his glass rod into a pretzel. We had some fun with the follows, the almost ate it and some that committed to the bite. Good times.. Today I had a float trip with a father and son. We did some Indy fishing with eggs and nymphs and did pretty good till noon then it slowed down. We had fun and they had not done much Steelhead/ Trout fishing on a indicator fly rig before but learned quickly. Pleasant weather but it never warmed up much, chipped ice all day. One Steelhead to the net some Trout to hand and several that got the better of them with wood ect. ect.. The Steelhead kept it challenging well say that. It was fun getting out on the river and I might have one more ice fishing run but most likely that season is over for me. To Busy. Phones ringing, people to check in and river trips.
We have some great rooms open at the Red Moose Lodge still for the up coming run and I have some great days open to fish if your interested in a guided float trip down the river for Steelhead and or Trout. It’s never to late to plan a Spring trip and have some fun on the river.
