The last few days we have lost the lion share of our snow base. The Pere Marquette River is high and dirty but not over it’s banks yet. We got lucky and missed the rain they forecasted for this past Tue/Wed that would have made things a real mess. Fishing was good yesterday in stained dirty water and the Brown Trout were happy as well as the Steelhead. Mid river and Lower river is a different story than up here near the Flywater.
I did some pluggen with my friend Brian last week on Fridayย the 5th. and we did well for the 4 hours we fished. Then I took Tim and his brother Tom on Sunday the 7th. pluggen but didn’t get pictures from them off there phones. I took Tim on day 2 to the Manistee River pluggen and it was slower with the bright sun, we had some hits but they got away. It was a great boat ride seeing the Big Man and Eagle perched on a branch very close to us and would not move. Pluggen is a 2-4 rod lure spread, backtrolled against the current for those that didn’t know. The fish hammer the lure and you know exactly which rod or rods has a fish on, yes you can get doubles and triples on.. Very fun way to catch Steelhead, Salmon and Trout.
Yesterday I took Kurt and his son Sam on a fly fishing trip and it was productive. We were teaching Sam to drift fish for his first time and his first fly bite was a 18″ brown on a egg pattern. Him and his dad had fun chasing down Steelhead around corners 200 yards from in the boat. We had this 11lb hen Steelhead under control for a few min then she decided to go back to the lake on us. We chased her down and got lucky enough to keep her on and away from the sticks all the way to the net. Memories made !
